Whether it’s Palladium or E-Werk, Schauspiel Köln or Kulturbunker—a vibrant, cool cultural and club scene has taken root in Cologne’s Mülheim district on a sprawling, revitalized industrial site. Right in the middle of it all, on the grounds of the old freight station, the Moxy has now emerged as a new “place to be.” According to its own statements, the Moxy Hotels brand is the fastest-growing brand of the Marriott International hotel group. Brumann was commissioned as interior designer and general contractor for the project, which was realized by Art-Invest Real Estate in a joint venture with OSMAB Holding AG.
For the Marriott Hotel Group’s young, urban 222-room concept, the project developers commissioned an extraordinary new building on the former factory grounds of cable manufacturer Felten & Guilleaume. Designed by the architectural firm caspar., the building at the cable warehouse makes a stylistic statement with its striking green clinker brick façade.
The same applies to the interior design. The lobby, bar, and public areas on the ground floor welcome guests with a modern industrial vintage style. Raw materials and historical references define the setting: the walls are clad in weathered wood from old shipping crates, the central restroom block is designed in the style of an old freight car, and the technical installations beneath the concrete ceiling are largely exposed. Amid this stylistic journey into Mülheim’s industrial history, inviting seating areas in a colorful mix of styles, a large co-working table, and a state-of-the-art video wall are scattered throughout. Meetings in the “Plug+Meet” areas become a professional pleasure thanks to thoughtful ergonomics, large whiteboards, and 56-inch screens. And the bar, open 24/7, with its long counter, casual chill zones, and well-stocked selection of drinks, is an attractive destination for guests and Mülheim night owls.
Following the vibrant, lively style experience of the lobby, the hallways and rooms welcome guests with a minimalist aesthetic and calm, clean lines. Soft shades from the greige spectrum allow body and soul to unwind after an exciting day, and the ultra-comfortable, almost floating-looking queen-size beds ensure a restful night’s sleep. The light woods of the rooms are also found in the bathroom, lending its simple, graphic elegance a natural, warm touch.
The Moxy has also set a strong example in terms of project management: The hotel was handed over to the operating company, The Chocolate on the Pillow Group, ready to welcome guests a full week ahead of the originally planned date.
