The Steigenberger Grandhotel & Spa on Petersberg, overlooking the Siebengebirge, is a historic luxury hotel and, as the former guesthouse of the federal government, is considered the most famous grand hotel in Germany. On behalf of the Federal Agency for Real Estate (BImA), Brumann served as the general contractor for interior construction and fixtures, fittings, and equipment (FFE) from 2019 to 2020, carrying out a modernization and expansion of the hotel complex.
The Petersberg Guest House has hosted state guests and royalty from around the world. It was the scene of important political decisions, a meeting place for the powerful, and a retreat for the famous—Queen Elizabeth II was a guest here, as was the Dalai Lama. Built in 1892 by perfume manufacturer Ferdinand Mülhens, the hotel has been part of Steigenberger Hotels & Resorts since 1990.
Based on plans by the Bollinger + Fehlig Architekten consortium and Project Orange (both from Berlin), the 120 rooms and suites as well as the public areas were renovated and modernized. Access to the public areas, which had previously been difficult, was simplified, and the restaurant and spa areas were renovated. The complete modernization of the building services and the wastewater system also ensures uniform, high-quality standards throughout the entire property.
As the general contractor, Brumann carried out this complete renovation in several construction phases while the hotel remained open for business. This involved, among other things, coordinating twelve trades, overcoming the “surprises” presented by the historic building fabric, and conscientiously implementing the requirements of historic preservation for the complex, the building’s silhouette, and parts of the structure.
