Whether it’s the Palladium or E-Werk, the Schauspiel Cologne theatre or the Kulturbunker –, a lively, cool cultural and club scene has grown up in the Muelheim district of Cologne in the sizeable revitalised industrial area. At the heart of this is the Moxy, created on the site of the old railway goods station and the new place to be. For this young, urban 222-room concept of the Marriott Hotel Group, an extraordinary new building was built on the former premises of the cable manufacturer Felten & Guilleaume, designed by caspar.architects, Cologne.

With its striking green clinker façade, the building at Am Kabellager sets the tone in terms of style. This also applies to the interior design, which was conceived and realised by Brumann Interior Concepts from the initial elements to the last details of the interior décor.

The lobby, bar and public areas on the ground floor welcome guests with a contemporary industrial vintage style. Rough materials and historical quotations characterise the setting – the walls are clad in weathered wood from old goods crates, the central toilet block resembles an old goods wagon, and the technical installations beneath the concrete ceiling are predominantly open-plan. In the midst of this style excursion into Muelheim’s industrial history, there are inviting seating areas in a colourful mix of styles, a large co-working table and a state-of-the-art video wall. Meetings in the ‘plug ‘n’ meet’ areas make doing business a pleasure, thanks to the thoughtful ergonomic positioning of the large wall panels and 56-inch screens. The bar, which is open 24/7, is also an attractive destination for guests and Muelheim night owls, with its long bar, relaxed chill zones and wide selection of drinks.

After the lively, vibrant style of the lobby, the corridors and bedrooms welcome guests with a purist aesthetic and calm, clean lines. Delicate pale shades from the greige colour spectrum let your mind and body rest after an exciting day, and the ultra-comfortable, almost free-floating queen-size beds ensure a relaxing night's sleep. The light wood tones in the bedrooms are echoed in the bathrooms, providing natural, warm notes against the simple graphic elegance.

Developed with the aim of setting a benchmark for urban, trendy hotels in Muelheim, the Moxy has also given a strong signal in terms of project management: the hotel was handed over, ready for guests, a whole week before the planned due date. As executive planners, we would therefore like to express our gratitude to the building contractor, operator, skilled craftworkers and the brand for their excellent cooperation.
