In the summer of 2021, the Moxy Köln-Bonn Airport opened at Konrad-Adenauer-Flughafen with a unique interior design. Developed by Art-Invest Real Estate, the project was handed over on schedule to the Chocolate on the Pillow Group—which operates the hotel under a franchise license from Marriott International—following a construction period of 1.5 years. For the new lifestyle hotel, the firm Brumann was commissioned to design the interiors and serve as general contractor for the interior fit-out and FFE.
The five-story hotel was built on a former parking lot according to plans by JSWD Architects of Cologne and features a direct connection to the terminal and the ICE train station. The pentagonal floor plan and ribbon-like façade draw inspiration from the design language of Terminal 1, built in 1970 by Prof. Schneider v. Esleben. The centerpiece is the fifth floor, from which guests and visitors enjoy an impressive panoramic view of the airport grounds and the tarmac.
The interior design concept plays with details and associations to the city of Cologne in all areas, and above all with the spirit of discovery of a young, travel-loving globetrotter target group. In a playful way, guests and visitors are taken on an exotic road trip, awakening a longing for exciting destinations and typical local “souvenirs.” The collectibles and decorative objects in the large lounge area provide diverse inspiration for travel souvenirs. The storytelling is underscored by raw materials, leather upholstery, and metallic objects, which, in combination with the concrete ceilings and walls, create a modern, design-oriented industrial-vintage look. Before setting off on a journey, the simple and functional design of the 220 rooms is intended to ground the globetrotters and allow them to recharge their batteries
In the public areas, guests and business travelers can hold meetings in the workspaces or in the five conference rooms. For relaxation, a modern fitness area or the spacious restaurant area, including a rooftop terrace, can be used. Details and eye-catching features are found everywhere. For instance, you’ll see travel stamps in the bar area, suitcase stickers serving as wallpaper in the elevators, and, last but not least, guests will discover a diverse collection of lost and found items on the hanging metal grilles. The oversized compass floor motif serves as a guide, directing world explorers and opening up various paths out into the wider world.
